Tax Overview

Tax implications for Hong Kong

Income Tax Rate
Progressive rates from 2% to 17%, or standard rate of 15% — whichever is lower

Hong Kong operates a territorial tax system — only income sourced in Hong Kong is taxed. The standard rate is capped at 15%, with no capital gains tax, no VAT/GST, and no withholding tax on dividends. This makes it one of the most tax-friendly jurisdictions in the world for high earners.

  • Territorial taxation: only Hong Kong-sourced income is taxed
  • No capital gains tax
  • No VAT, GST, or sales tax
  • No tax on dividends or interest income
  • Canada-Hong Kong tax treaty (CDTA) signed in 2012 to avoid double taxation
  • Must file Canadian departure return when leaving Canada
