Cost of Living

Singapore is expensive — comparable to Toronto or Vancouver for housing, but food and transport can be very affordable if you eat local and use public transit. No tipping culture.

Culture

Daily Life

Language

English is widely spoken and is the language of business, government, and education. You won't need to learn another language, though Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil are also common.

Safety

One of the safest cities in the world. Extremely low crime rates. Walking alone at night is normal and comfortable.

Climate

Tropical — hot and humid year-round (28–34°C). No seasons. Rain is frequent but brief. Air conditioning is everywhere.

Culture

Multicultural society blending Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Western influences. Food culture is exceptional. Work culture is professional but can involve longer hours than Canada.

Honest Assessment

Real Obstacles

High Cost of Living

Housing and car ownership are extremely expensive. Owning a car can cost C$101,000+ due to Certificate of Entitlement. Budget carefully. (Housing and car ownership are extremely expensive. Owning a car can cost S$100,000+ due to Certificate of Entitlement. Budget carefully.)

Competitive Job Market

The COMPASS framework means employers must justify hiring foreigners. You need genuinely specialized skills to stand out.

Small Country, Limited Space

Singapore is a city-state — there's no countryside or large open spaces. If you need nature and space, this can feel claustrophobic.

Strict Laws

Laws are strictly enforced. Fines for littering, jaywalking, and chewing gum are real. Drug offenses carry severe penalties.

Path to PR is Competitive

Permanent Residency is not guaranteed. Applications are evaluated holistically and many are rejected. Plan for EP renewal cycles.
